The Iowa City Water Division is asking residents to take steps to prevent freezing pipes.
When temperatures fall below 32 degrees, water pipes can freeze, break and potentially cause significant damage to residences.
To avoid the potential for frozen pipes, the water division suggests arranging to have someone check your residence while you are away. Show the person where the water shut-off valve is located -- typically in the basement between the wall and meter. Additionally, do not set the thermostat below 55 degrees or shut off heat to areas of the residence that contain plumbing or water fixtures.
The city also suggests repairing cracks or holes in the home to prevent cold air from entering the residence, wrapping pipes in unheated areas with heat tape, exposing plumbing to warm air inside the house and allowing frozen pipes to thaw naturally, not by applying direct heat.
